Dillinger's string of robberies had landed him the top spot on the FBI's most wanted list, and his gang memebers trailed directly behind him. His antics couldn't last forever, and after a betrayal from a close friend lead to them almost being captured the crew made for the road again. They eventually found themselves back in Chicago and Dillinger took is girlfriend, Evelyn Frechette, and her friend to a movie downtown.

This night would be Dillinger's last. Evelyn's friend Ana Cumpănaș had been working with police, planning this night to trap Dillinger, but Dillinger didn't back down and was shot by police. He died July 22, 1934 of his wounds.
One of the most well known criminals of the Great Depression era, Dillinger was quite liked by the public. Distrust of banks by common people meant many viewed him as a Robin Hood like figure. His death was a shock to many, and thousands flocked to see his body.

Although he was a gangster, many had admiration for the gentlemanly way he conducted himself and the charisma he was known for. He may have died an early death, but his legacy is timeless.
